How to read a 13F
Desk note. Updated September 14, 2026.
Follow-The-Filings is a public desk for as-filed SEC Form 13F books among featured institutional managers. Figures are what the filer reported. They are not a live book, not free float, and not advice.
What is a Form 13F?
Form 13F is the SEC quarterly report of long US-listed equity holdings by institutional investment managers over the $100 million Section 13(f) securities threshold. This desk shows a featured set of those managers — not the whole 13F universe. Shorts, many derivatives, and most private names never appear in the table.
Why is 13F data delayed?
A 13F-HR is due 45 days after quarter-end. Weekend statutory dates roll to Monday (mid-February, mid-May, mid-August, mid-November). A Q2 book is holdings as of June 30, usually public by mid-August. Between the as-of date and the file date the book can move a lot. We print as-filed figures. We do not invent a live snapshot.
Is 13F AUM the same as free float?
No. Book AUM here is the sum of reported 13F long-equity values. Portfolio weight is that name as a share of the manager's book — not percent of the issuer's free float or shares outstanding. A 10% book weight can be a thin slice of the company.
What is a manager vs a book?
A manager is one featured filer (one CIK) on Managers. A book is one processed information table for a report period. Restatements (13F-HR/A) replace that period's table when we process them. Operating-company 13F-HR books sit on OpCo 13F, a separate cohort.
How do I use Managers, Activity, filings, and ticker pages?
Managers is the featured directory — latest book, AUM, holdings count, freshness. Activity is QoQ New / Exit / Add / Reduce by filed date. Newest 13Fs is the latest processed featured filings. Ticker pages (for example AAPL) list featured holders of that name. Company filings is 8-Ks for names in those books, not Form 13F. Compare, Grid, and Summary are two books, a mixed-period heat map, and a quarter-aligned master book.
What we leave blank
Prefer blank over a wrong public number. A missing AUM, street print, or holder count is not zero. Source filings remain on SEC EDGAR.
